SUMMARY

In the report themed “The Economic Situation of Society and Purchasing/Consumption Practices,” public opinions on the short-, medium-, and long-term effects of the AK Party’s economic management are examined in detail. Household and per capita income levels, perceptions of class position, levels of indebtedness, and changes in consumption behavior in the face of inflation are evaluated from the perspective of economic vulnerability. In addition, voters’ current political preferences, their evaluations of Erdoğan and the opposition blocs, as well as possible alliance scenarios and leadership capacities are discussed. The report also explores society’s everyday encounters and experiences with migrants and Syrian refugees, along with their expectations for solutions to related issues, while measuring attitudes toward the Gezi Park protests. Furthermore, individuals’ compliance with COVID-19 measures in the post-pandemic period, life satisfaction, weekend habits, summer holiday plans, and participation in religious practices such as fasting and almsgiving (fitre) during Ramadan are assessed. Finally, current living conditions, expectations regarding both individual and national economic crises, and the relationship between these expectations and political preferences are analyzed.

Since 2010, KONDA Research has been conducting a monthly series of political and social studies under the title BAROMETER. Each BAROMETER study includes a set of standard questions on demographics, political preferences, and economic expectations, as well as questions addressing current public agenda topics to measure societal perceptions and expectations across different fields. The research underlying this 131st report in the Barometer series was conducted through face-to-face interviews with 3,620 individuals in their homes on May 14–15, 2022, across 178 neighborhoods and villages in 122 districts (including city centers) within 36 provinces.
