SUMMARY

Household spending patterns in Turkey are multilayered: While rent and food remain the mainstays, education, culture, personal care, and small "moral" expenses constitute significant components of household choices. Living in a metropolitan area places a significant burden on household budgets. The percentage of people who spent money on eating out last month was 46 percent. The spending-to-income ratio for households with babies was 103 percent. The percentage of those who struggled with their spending was 58 percent.

This article examines the distribution of household spending and the ratio of spending to household income across different socio-demographic groups in society:

  • Now, I will list the spending items for YOUR HOUSEHOLD. Can you tell me how much you spent on each item last month?
  • How difficult or comfortable were you spending these expenses?
