Prof. Dr. Halil Nalçaoğlu examines the sociology of knowing how to swim in Türkiye:
When you ask, "Do you know how to swim?" you are actually implicitly asking several other things: Did you go on vacation during your childhood? Did you have a pool membership? Were you able to participate in school sports? Did your city offer such facilities? Without asking any of these directly, a single question allows you to pick up a strong signal regarding the economic and cultural capital people have accumulated over their lifetimes. Moreover, this question offers another advantage. People asked about their income might give unrealistic answers, and they might not be honest about their political preferences. However, the question "Do you know how to swim?" is neutral and non-threatening; it requires neither defensiveness nor concealment.
